Dear valued Torrey Pines Conservancy members and fellow Torrey Pines nature enthusiasts,
We hope this message finds you well and eagerly anticipating your next adventure in our beloved Torrey Extension. As many of you know, our cherished natural haven faced a significant challenge in June when a fire swept through the area. Today, we’re excited to share with you the progress made by State Parks and our plans for the future.
The Journey So Far
In the wake of the June fire, we made the difficult but necessary decision to close the entire Extension. This closure was not just a precautionary measure for public safety, but also a crucial step in protecting and evaluating our precious natural and cultural resources. During this time, our dedicated staff has been working tirelessly, assessing the impact and planning for a thoughtful, phased reopening.
Exciting News: Trails Reopening!
We’re thrilled to announce that as of August 14, 2024, State Parks has been able to reopen several of our most popular trails:
- Hidden Pines Trail
- Daughters of the Revolution (DAR) Trail
- West Ridge DAR Trail
- Mar Scenic Trail
These reopened paths offer a unique opportunity to witness nature’s incredible resilience firsthand. As you traverse these trails, you may notice signs of renewal and regrowth – a testament to the enduring spirit of our natural world.
Looking Ahead: Future Reopenings
While we celebrate the reopening of these trails, we’re also looking forward to welcoming you back to other areas of the Extension:
- Red Ridge Trail: Currently closed, but we’re working hard on trail repairs and improvements. We’re optimistic about reopening this trail later this fall, allowing you to experience the breathtaking autumn colors from its vantage points.
- Margaret Fleming Trail: This beloved trail requires more extensive restoration. We anticipate its grand reopening in mid-2025, and we promise it will be worth the wait!
A Message of Gratitude
Your patience, understanding, and support during this challenging time have been nothing short of extraordinary. As we continue our restoration efforts and work towards fully reopening the Torrey Extension, we’re reminded of the strong community that surrounds and cherishes this natural wonder.
We invite you to join us on this journey of renewal. Each visit to the reopened trails not only allows you to reconnect with nature but also contributes to the ongoing restoration and preservation of this magnificent area.
Stay tuned for more updates, and we look forward to seeing you on the trails soon!
Thank you for being an integral part of our Reserve community and for your continued support as we nurture the Extension back to its full glory.
