The Historic Torrey Pines Lodge, a cherished landmark within the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, will undergo critical structural repairs from May 5-16, 2025. Torrey Pines Conservancy is excited to invest in and collaborate with California State Parks on this vital preservation effort, and to provide a unique training opportunity for professionals in historic restoration.
Project Overview
The restoration will focus on repairing and replacing the structural head beam and a failed central column on the Lodge’s front porch. Additionally, workers will shore and jack the sagging timber header, address water intrusion affecting four support columns, and continue phased repairs on the delaminated exterior plaster at the entrance. These measures will enhance the safety and longevity of the Lodge, ensuring it remains a secure and welcoming site for park visitors and staff.
A Critical Need
Since 2015, the Lodge’s head beam has been temporarily supported, but a permanent replacement is essential for structural integrity. Similarly, addressing all four porch columns will reinforce the building’s resilience, preventing further deterioration. The phased plaster restoration is also a crucial component of this project, maintaining the Lodge’s historic character while protecting it from the elements.
A Hands-On Training Experience
As part of this initiative, California State Parks will conduct a specialized training program for professionals and students in historic structure conservation. Participants will gain hands-on experience in:
- Structural maintenance planning and preparation
- Material estimation and sourcing
- Sampling, testing, and exploratory work
- Researching and interpreting historical documentation
- Safe demolition and material handling
- Shoring, stabilization, and waterproofing
- Historic plaster application and general masonry
- Scaffolding setup and safety protocols
By engaging in this project, trainees will develop essential skills needed for preserving historic structures across California and beyond.
