Congratulations to longtime friend of Torrey Pines, Walter Munk, who turned 100 on October 19, 2017. The famed Scripps Institute oceanographer spoke at our annual meeting a few years ago and spun a marvelous mix of science as well as humorous tales.
A new section of the Boardwalk in La Jolla Shores has been renamed in his honor.
Dr. Munk began his career at SIO in 1939 and is best known for his research into wave forecasting. He once told TPA board member Peter Jensen a story about his early days with wet suits and scuba gear. He and a diving companion emerged from the ocean adjacent to the Marine Room restaurant windows and proceeded to shock the diners, who’d never seen such alien gear. It was like a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon.
