- RESOLUTION
- A resolution of the Torrey Pines Association concerning a proposal to change the status of Santa Rosa Island.
- WHEREAS, the Torrey Pines Association was founded by Guy Fleming in 1950 for the preservation of the Torrey pine and the environs surrounding this rarest of all pines in these United States; and
- WHEREAS, the Torrey pine naturally occurs in only two localities in the world, Santa Rosa Island and Torrey Pines State Reserve; and
- WHEREAS, Santa Rosa Island is part of the Channel Islands National Park, an area set aside and dedicated to the preservation of unique natural, historical, and cultural resources to be found in those islands, for the edification and enjoyment of all citizens of the United States; and
- WHEREAS, the members of the Torrey Pines Association strongly believe that the preservation of Santa Rosa Island as part of the Channel Islands National Park, where it serves as a refuge and natural habitat for the Torrey pine, is essential to the biodiversity and survival of this rare tree, and
- WHEREAS, the natural, historical, and cultural features on the island are open and equally accessible to all citizens of the United States and protected from the risk of harm that would result from administration of the island by any governmental department or agency other than the National Park Service,
- NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Board of Counselors of the Torrey Pines Association does hereby oppose any proposal to change the status of Santa Rosa Island as an integral part of the Channel Islands National Park, and is opposed to the administration of Santa Rosa Island by any department or agency of the United States other than the National Park Service, and directs that this resolution be conveyed to all interested parties including federal, state, and local agencies and representatives.
